Intro To: Good Family Games

With Family day this Monday, we’ve decided to release our Intro article a little early this week, and we’ve put together a list of games that we think are great choices for families. We’ve focused on fun, fast paced games that are easy to learn and are great for kids. When you visit us at The Round Table during our extended Family Day hours, make sure to sit down and play some of these great games:

Exploding Kittens, a competitive game for 2 to 5 players that can be played in 15 minutes is the shortest game on our list and is a great fast-paced way to start off your Family Day at The Round Table. This game became famous for its massive success on Kickstarter which can be largely attributed to its premise alone. In this kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette, players take turns drawing cards until someone draws an exploding kitten and loses the game! It’s not all luck-based though. Many of the cards in the deck give you ways to tip the odds in your favour, allowing you to re-shuffle the deck or force an opponent to draw extra cards! This very fast paced game is perfect for anyone looking for something fast, simple, and fun!

King of New York, a competitive game for 2 to 6 players that can be played in 40 minutes is a game in which you play as giant monsters attempting to be the first to gain 20 victory points or be the last monster standing. In this game, you compete to become the most famous monster, destroy tons of buildings and escape from the military. This dice rolling game is a classic monster brawler that’s perfect to play with high-energy kids.

Survive: Escape from Atlantis!, a competitive game for 2 to 4 players that can be played in 60 minutes is a cutthroat game in which players compete to evacuate their game pieces from an island of 40 hex-tiles that is slowly sinking into the ocean. In this dice rolling modular board game, you will have to escape in boats or by swimming, and avoid sea serpents, whales, and sharks! This is a great game if you’re looking for something with slightly more thematic meat to it than some of the other games on this list, and like the other games listed here, it’s a great fast-paced game for kids.

Takenoko, a competitive game for 2 to 4 players that can be played in 45 minutes is an objective based farming game, full of Panda-mayhem! In this game, players cultivate a shared bamboo garden, growing different types of bamboo, while feeding the sacred panda that roams the garden. This game is one of the most strategically interesting games on the list, and is a great choice for anyone looking for a slightly more serious gaming experience. This game is easy to learn but offers great strategic depth!

Each of these games is fast-paced and light-hearted but if you’re worried about tensions running high, check out our Intro To: Good Cooperative Games, for games that will let your family work together! Whatever you decide to play, we’re looking forward to your next visit to The Round Table, whether it’s this Family Day or any other day!
