Drafting Games

If you’ve been keeping up with our Intro Articles, you’re already familiar with the concept of drafting cards (selecting 1 card from a set, passing it on, and repeating this process until there are no remaining cards) from our Intro To: Drafting Magic the Gathering, but did you know that there are tons of great board games that use drafting as a core mechanic? Read on for some of our favorites!

Paradox is a competitive game for 2 to 4 players that can be played in 40 to 120 minutes. In this science fiction strategy game, players take on the roles of scientists attempting to save the entire universe from a space-time disturbance! Players compete by collecting sets of cards, and managing their resources, and a set of colored disks. The winner is an intergalactic hero, responsible for preventing the distruction of the multiverse! If you’re looking for an intense strategy game with beautiful components, give this one a shot!

7 Wonders is a competitive game for 2 to 7 players that can be played in 30 minutes. We introduced this game in one of our earliest articles, and it’s still one of our favorites!  This fast-paced, simple drafting game consists of 3 rounds of drafting followed by a final scoring phase to determine which player has collected the most valuable sets of cards! Some collections of cards grant more resources which are required to select the most valuable cards in the final round! Others are worth exponential points if collected in specific combinations! It’s difficult to find a game the does a better job of capturing what drafting is all about. If you’re looking for a good game to start with to learn the concept, definitely check this one out!

Seasons is a competitive game for 2 to 4 players that can be played in 60 minutes. In this dice-based game of wizard battles, players start the game by drafting a deck of 9 cards that they will use throughout the rest of the game. Each round, the players continue to draft, selecting dice from a pool instead of cards! Throughout the game, the seasons progress, changing the dice used, determining which resources will be available to play the cards drafted at the start of the game. At the end of the game, each player scores points based on the cards that they have played, and the crystals that they have purchased throughout the game. The player with the most points wins! If you’re looking for a drafting game with some novel twists and a clever use of dice, then this is the game for you!

Sushi  Go! is a competitive board game for 2 to 5 players that can be played in 15 to 20 minutes. In this super fast-paced set collecting game, players take on the role of customers at a restaurant trying to grab up the best combinations of sushi before their opponents can beat them to it. This lightweight game introduces drafting in its simplest form, condensing the core mechanics of other drafting games to something that can be learned in only a few minutes, and played very quickly. If you’re looking for a very fast warm-up game, give this one a try!
