Intro To: Good 4X Games

We’ve introduced you to tons of cool genres of board game in the past, including mystery games, and trivia games, and now we’re going to introduce you to some of our favorite 4X games. This genre of games, as the name implies, focuses on the 4 “X”s: “eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate”. Put simply, 4X games focus on the various intricacies of creating an empire, and have an important emphasis on economic and technological advancement as well as military conquest. Here are a few of the 4X games that you should try next time you visit us at The Round Table:

Tiny Epic Kingdoms is a competitive game for 2 to 5 players that can be played in 30 minutes. This pocket-sized game puts each player in control of a growing kingdom and gives them the goal of surpassing their friends in some combination of expanding their population into other realms, learning powerful magic, and building grand towers. The core of the game functions off of a resource management system and a limited action system which only gives you so many options on each turn. This light, fast-paced game is a great introduction to the 4X genre.

Eminent Domain is a competitive game for 2 to 4 players that can be played in 45 minutes. In this simple deck-building game, players survey the galaxy to expand their civilizations, harvest resources for trade, and do research to improve their technology. Each player’s civilization’s abilities are based on a deck of Role cards that changes as the game progresses. If you’re already familiar with the deck building genre, this game is a great way to get into the 4X genre.

Eclipse is a competitive game for 2 to 6 players that can be played in 60 to 200 minutes. In this quintessential 4X game, each player is placed in control of a vast interstellar civilization, competing to explore new star systems, research technologies, and build spaceships with which to wage war. This game is a lot more in depth than the other games on this list and is a great game to work your way up to. Dip your feet in the 4X genre with one of the other games on this list, and then dive into the genre with this game.
